You’re excited, you finally got the wedding invitation you’ve been waiting for in the post, and can’t wait for the big day. But, it’s going to be hosted in a barn, and you’ve never been to a barn wedding before. The initial excitement fades a little and changes to confusion, what’s the etiquette? How does this differ from a usual wedding? What do I wear? Here are a few tips to get you thinking:

Not all barn weddings are the same
First thing you need to find out from the hosts if it is not indicated on the invite, is the theme. The fact here is that, just because it is hosted in a barn, does not mean it is casual. A barn wedding can be a rustic affair or an idyllic posh country treat. It can be classy or much more casual. Sometimes you may be asked to wear wellies as there may be the possibility of rain in a muddy field. So, you need to understand the location and the theme. Generally speaking though, if the invite does not indicate anything unusual, you can assume that it is business as usual.

What dress to wear to a rustic affair
If the invite does state it is a rustic wedding you are going to have to think a little bit differently, you are going to need something light and breezy as you are going to be outdoors a lot. You should think about pretty patterns, perhaps, gingham or floral. Maybe you should wear something with ruffles. Something colourful, not garish. Something that says spring, summertime. You need to think about the length too. You are not going to want something that drapes on the floor, and you probably are not going to be able to wear the heels you usually would. A nice midi-floral dress would be great.

What shoes to wear
If it is going to be outside in the grass, then you are not going to be able to wear those spiked heels that you usually would, or those beautiful high heeled sandals you have been dying to wear, sorry ladies. So, you need to think outside the box. In a field, you may need to think about boots, like smart ankle boots or some decent flats, perhaps some brogues. The weather will play a huge part on what footwear you need to wear. Maybe get a couple of choices and then see how the weather is on the day. If the weather holds, you may be able to wear those casual sandals. If they have indicated wellies, perhaps have those in the car waiting for the weather to turn.

The key to dressing for a barn wedding is to understand the theme. Then to be prepared for the weather conditions. It is important to remember that this is just as beautiful and elegant as any other more traditional wedding. So, although it may take a little more thinking and preparation, it will be just as beautiful.
